Jim Wang advocates green IT on the first SaaS Conference in Beijing, China
Beijing, China, August 28, 2007 The SaaS Conference China 2007 is held here
today. It is the first SaaS conference ever held in China. “It comes a
long way for China’s effort on promoting Software as a Service. It is a
milestone,” said Mr. Kaibing Cao, vice president of CCW (China
ComputerWorld) Research which co-organized the conference with IT Manager
magazine. The major industry leaders such as China Telecom, China Mobile,
China Netcom, UFIDA, Kingdee, Salesforce.com, OlymTech, OpSource, AliSoft,
and many others presented on the conference.
OlymTech’s co-founder and chief consultant, Jim Wang, gave his speech on
Green IT. Jim was surprised after learned that the electricity consumed by
those servers in the data centers accounts for 1.5% of the total electricity
used by the Americans. Jim pointed out that the savings on electricity by
moving the software industry to SaaS model will be tremendous. He compared
SaaS to public transportations like buses and subways which people share
with others to move around. SaaS enables the sharing of servers and data
center infrastructure which would otherwise be dedicated to individual
companies, or even hosted internally in the companies.
Though the benefit and potential of SaaS are encouraging, Jim also pointed
out the tough challenges lying ahead of the SaaS industry in China. China’
s SaaS initiatives started almost the same time as companies such as
Salesforce.com, Catapulse, Corio, etc. in the U.S did. However, there is no
company in China ever come close to success in this space after seven years
of effort.
Jim pointed out the reasons to be the lack of investment capital,
technology, and marketing experiences for the SaaS industry. He told the
audience in the conference that OlymTech is there to help solving those
tough issues by facilitating to establish a value chain for SaaS using its
technology, experience and expertise gained in the past seven years.
OlymTech is there to help software companies, telecom service providers and
other service providers to transform themselves into SaaS model.
